Collecting Moss...

Posted by Troy | 7:48 AM | | 12 comments »

This was not a planned trip. It was just an intention to collect moss to prepare for a breeding tank. So we (me, my sis and girlfriend) went to the same spot where we had caught Borneo Suckers, because I spotted moss growing in that area in my previous trip. Can’t tell what species, as I’m not good in plants :(

Same time we also spent some time catching some suckers. The same type of suckers as in previous post.

Anyway, here’s some of the pics of the moss I collected...

Moss growing in the wild

A little close up of how they look like in nature

Collected moss...

After cleaning...

Java moss? I can't tell :(

i m from tg. aru.. yeah.. few frens wanted to go there to take some pics.. so i decided to tag along to collect some moss. kiansom? how far do u need to trek in to get the moss or sucker?

Hehey...not far. It's by the road side actually. Before the kiansom park there's a bridge. you can find moss under the bridge. And the suckers, are everywhere from inside the park to downstream of the river. You just need to spot them. You interested in suckers also?

i dun mind keeping some, since i already have a normal tank. but how do u catch the suckers?

  8. Borneo Sucker // June 16, 2009 at 10:48 PM

I bet you never seen them in the wild ehh? small ones are much easier to catch, they don't dart off like the adult does. It's not that easy to catch adults :) What sort of normal tank you have? I understand that these suckers require high O2, and thus normal tank like those for community fishes is not that suitable.

i have seen one before, darted off quite fast though. this was in some remote river off papar old road, treked inside to do some fishing.

oh really? need high level of O2? didnt knw that, so how u keeping urs? actually i m more interested in aquascape, hence i wanna get the moss

Owh papar...I'm planning a trip there to hunt some bettas, got a challenge request, haha

Yeah, this is because they live in riffles and fast flowing water, O2 are high.

What sort of aquascape are you into? Amano or biotope type?

damn, i m nt familiar with those terms. but currently my 1st attempt to to grow moss carpets, and maybe walls. later on i will move into java ferns, and thn decide on the actual design on the tank.

    Owh I see.....haha.

Anyway a biotope tank is just a replicate of a natural habitat that you are interested. Say for example, you want a discus fish biotope, so you actually create a tank that replicate the way it is in the wild, the type of plants, substrate, water chemistry and etc. Another example, borneo sucker, the biotope is river like, less plants, lots of rocks...you know, just see how they look in the wild, and replicate it in your tank :)

For Amano tank setup, I would say the basic idea is more to art.

Haha, you can do a search on this kind of tank setup. Both are interesting as well :)
