Here's how I do it, in the tank I'm working with now...check out the pic...
...errr...pics looks a little blur because I took it using a handphone camera :)...anyway enjoy :D

Glossostigma elatinoides growing using gravel as substrate

Glossostigma elatinoides starting to fill up forming carpet

Formation of Glossostigma elatinoides carpet

Look at the roots...

Just another pic...anyway click on any of the pics, it will take you to my photo album :D

If you are askin bout the specs...here it is, the technical specs...

Tank: 24" x 12" x 12" (LWH)
Tank capacity:  approx 15 USgal
Substrate: Potting soil as the bottommost layer and gravel as topmost layer
Lighting: 2 x 55watt PLL 6500K and 1 x 24watt T5 10000K
Filtration: Resun CY-20
Cooling: Cool using pc fans
CO2: Pressurized CO2 at approx 1 bubble per sec

I didn't make any documentation or photo journal of the setup process of this tank, because I've lost my camera, and that explain why I took the pics today using a handphone camera, anyway I use a similar technique in my previouse tank setup. Check it out here...

    Borneo,
hi. is it a must to have a check valve for diy Co2. my co2 seems not so pressure to the aquarium.i just put a small airstone.. but the bubble not coming out.
    >Clive

  8. Borneo Sucker // June 2, 2010 at 7:35 AM

    Clive,
Yes, it's highly recommended to have a check valve...as it prevent water siphoning from your tank into DIY CO2. Also always place your DIY CO2 below your tank water level, not above your tank. This way it will prevent the DIY CO2 mixture from entering into your tank and poison your fishes.

How long has the DIY CO2 been setup...it will take sometime for the mixture to produce CO2.

    Borneo,
goshh.. i mixxing it .. n waited for 10 hours only it react.. n not power to blow into my tank.. if direct from co2 bottle. it can manage to bubble my tank. if go thru water filter. no pressure at all..can help me wit this.did check valves help to boost the pressure to tank?or it just prevent water enter?

  10. Borneo Sucker // June 2, 2010 at 5:56 PM

    Clive,
Yeap, it usually take few hours to react. Sometime it can even take a day :(

No, check valve doesn't boost any pressure, it's just act as a one way gate.

If go thru filter???...what type of filter? and how you diffuse it thru filter?

Let's just try to diffuse the CO2 into your tank, not thru your filter. Keep it for few days, and not disturb anything. Removing the airstone from the tank, will only create loss of pressure in the airtube, and that will lengthen the time for the pressure to build up in the tube.

How did you construct your DIY CO2? is it similar to my design? DO you have the second bottle?...if you have the second bottle, that will act as an indicator that your mixture is working and reacting, and all you need to do is wait for the pressure to build up in the bottle, then airtube and eventually it will be released thru the airstone.

  11. Anonymous // June 2, 2010 at 6:26 PM

    Borneo,
my co2 same as ur digram.co2 go in the small bottle of water. then to the aquarium. but if go in water bottle. the pressure won't come out. seems not enuh pressure . if i dirrect from the co2 bottle,it works.
if without the water filter.my tank starts to build some sort of jelly.n i using brownsugar. as someppl said it generates more co2.

  12. ho // June 2, 2010 at 6:33 PM

    haha :)
busy breeding the fishes for makan or ornamental ones?
my tank still the same. stuck with mollies as they reproduced a lot!!! huh...
even gave some away to friends :)

    u lost ur camera??
so getting yourself a new one soon?
    slr ka?

  13. Borneo Sucker // June 2, 2010 at 8:11 PM

    Clive,
yes, fix the second bottle, and wait awhile, the pressure have to be build inside the second bottle before being able to be released thru the airstone.

  14. Borneo Sucker // June 2, 2010 at 8:18 PM

    Ho,
as usual owh, breeding the commercial fishes :D
wah, you become molly factory?...can sell in pasar malam arr, hehe :D

ya lo, not actually lost, but spoiled. So it's consider a lost, cost of repairing it is rediculous, better use the money for something better...haha :D

Yeah, hehe, I'm planning for a DSLR...it's an investment la, so have to save some money first....or breed more fish and sell first, haha :D

    CLIve

  18. Borneo Sucker // June 3, 2010 at 5:49 AM

Hey bro, the plants doesn't exactly absorb the tiny bubble :D....but don't worry, the tinier the bubble, the better it dissolve or stay in the water.

hehe...the carpet plants are tempting ehh :D, yeah I think you should go for the dwarf hairgrass. Much easier than glosso :D

Wooo waterfalls....long time I didn't go for nature :(....yeah, look around when you are at the falls, you can find moss, nice rock shape for your tank, and maybe some driftwood, and maybe some fishes too.....haha :D

  19. Anonymous // June 3, 2010 at 6:26 AM

Ohhh.. waterfalls can get moss?!!! really?!! rock n driftwoods. here can easily find.. but moss. i dunno.. usually will grow where underwater. or riverbank?
YEAH!! the hairgrass really so so nice. :)
and borneo, can i ask u.. the lights do i need to off the light at nite? or 24/7 on it?
    Clive

  20. Borneo Sucker // June 3, 2010 at 6:40 AM

    Clive,
you can find moss on river bank, on rocks, in and out of water. But you have to know what species are they. If they grow underwater then they are definetely aquatic moss. but sometime aquatic moss grow out of water. And you can be confuse with the terrestrial moss. If you can't find any in waters, then try to look at places that are moist and damp, there sure have moss, most lightly aquatic type, but we are still unsure, so have to bring it home and grow to find out :D

Remember don't take everything and rob the nature :D...just take enough for your own use. Hope you can find something interesting :D

Here's my post about collecting wild moss...check it out
    http://borneosucker.blogspot.com/2009/06/collecting-moss.html

here's another aquatic plant in the wild, but not in waterfalls...anyway just to show you how they look like in the wild...this is some kind of hairgrass :D
    http://borneosucker.blogspot.com/2010/01/wild-hairgrasseleocharis-sp.html

DON'T on lights 24/7, you will just attract algae to bloom....6-10 hours a day is more than enough. I use a timer to control my lighting period :D...so lights turn on automatically :)

  21. Anonymous // June 3, 2010 at 6:55 AM

okok .. i will try find some n take pic show u.. need ur guide..
Cool! auto lighting.. wish to have 1.. :)can't wait for this weekend. hopefully can find some Moss.. hehe..
by the way.. how many aquarium u got at home? r u own a fish shop?
    Clive

  22. Borneo Sucker // June 3, 2010 at 7:11 AM

Wokie, will wait for you pics :D
Hehehe, you don't have to wish, coz it's easy to have an auto lighting, all you need is just a timer...here's how a timer looks like:
    http://www.tnkelect.com/images/products/OT-TM-ME20.JPG
Of course there's many type of design, but this is standard type. You can get it in electrical shop, or I think Supermarkets should have them :D

Hmm...I got few aquariums, I think 10 like that of various sizes. But only 4 are planted tanks, while others are still empty. Of the 4 planted tank, 3 have to be redo again. And I'm focusing on the 1 planted tank which is now you see it here in this post :D

Nope, I don't own a fish shop :)...But I do involve with some fish stuff :D...I'm an aquaculturist :P

  23. Anonymous // June 3, 2010 at 9:10 PM

Dun mind to email me the pricing, and if u have messenger, dun mind to add me at mrlolx@live.com for some chat, as im really 'falling in love' with aquatic plants too, i just started mine months ago, im looking for a suitable plant, and easy mantenance 1, chill, c u, hope to hear more from u

  25. Borneo Sucker // June 3, 2010 at 11:50 PM

    Clive,
2 aquarium is a good start :D....once you are into this planted tank, most lightly you will increase more tanks soon :D

Owh, neon tetra not available there? I guess its off season. You can always ask the shop owner to let you know when the next batch of neons are coming :D

  26. Borneo Sucker // June 4, 2010 at 12:01 AM

    Louis,
Hi, thanks a lot for your appreciation on my tank :D

And yes, I grow my plants without those expensive substrate :D

Haha, aquatic plants, especially planted tank is tempting ehh...and once you get started it's addicting :D

Okay, I will add you on MSN, and we can chat there. I will see you there, but for now, I have to go....Nice meeting you :D

    CLIVE

  30. Borneo Sucker // June 5, 2010 at 7:53 AM

Harr???...How did you pour your tetra into your tank?...Did you acclimatize them before releasing them?...What type of tetra you bought?

I have now idea how the jelly jelly thing looks like...is it slimy when you touch it, or you can see it with your eye? In my case, it is slimy when I touch it, but can't see anything. All I do is just rub it off, I guess that's just some growth of biofilm...I have to see some pics of the jelly thing to understand better :)

  31. Anonymous // June 6, 2010 at 12:10 AM

    borneo,

    Clive

  32. Borneo Sucker // June 6, 2010 at 12:28 AM

Owh that's bad.....and thats where things go wrong, just pour in without acclimatizing. They are dead because your action kill them :(....please check out this link to learn about acclimatizing fish:
    http://www.fishlore.com/acclimating-tropicalfish.htm

Allright, I will wait for you pics
